Description

Pennyroyal
Man Found Standing writes:
Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium) is a plant found globally, with its leaves and
extracted oil used for medicinal purposes. It's a member of the mint family with a
scent reminiscent of spearmint. Caution must be exercised as it possesses toxic
properties which can be lethal if ingested in larger than normal amounts. Despite
its dangers, pennyroyal has some beneficial properties such as antioxidant,
antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory effects, attributed to compounds like alpha-
terpineol and pulegone.
Uses of Pennyroyal:
1. Insecticide: Acts as an effective insect repellent and insecticide due to its
potent scent.
2. Digestive Aid:  One drop diluted in water stimulates bowel movement,
aiding in digestion.
3. Respiratory Aid: Early settlers used Pennyroyal for medicine to treat
respiratory and reproductive problems.
4. Topical Remedy: Used topically for inflammation relief, especially on
joints and muscles.
5. Skincare: Applied in safe doses, it may improve symptoms of eczema,
rosacea, psoriasis, and other skin conditions.
Side Effects and Precautions: Pennyroyal consumption, never use more than a couple of drops a day to
maintain safety. More than normal aromatherapy amounts (twenty drops in
24 hours is the high end of normal aromatherapy amounts) can lead to severe
side effects, including liver and kidney damage, gastrointestinal issues,
fever, restlessness, and more.

It is highly toxic to children and should be avoided entirely by pregnant
women. (Ingesting 5 ml of pennyroyal can be lethal.)
Pennyroyal Essential Oil:
Pennyroyal essential oil offers antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antiseptic
properties. It has been historically used for infections, inflammation, and to
regulate menstruation.
Given its high toxicity and potential for severe side effects if used in larger than
normal amounts, it is essential to approach the use of pennyroyal with extreme
caution. It is suggested to only use this oil topically and in small amounts.
